Cannabis Harvest, Drying and Curing: Complete Guide

When to harvest: the ideal time

Harvest timing defines final flower quality. Use a loupe or microscope to observe trichomes: harvest when 70-80% are milky and the rest amber for balanced effect. Harvest earlier for more cerebral effect, later for more relaxing effect. Pistils should be 70-90% darkened and retracted. Before harvest, give 24-48 hours of complete darkness. Many believe this stimulates resin production as protection.

How to harvest

Use clean gloves and pruning shears. Cut the main stem or branch by branch. Remove large fan leaves immediately. Decide between wet trim (trimming before drying, easier, faster dry) or dry trim (trimming after drying, preserves more terpenes). Handle buds as minimally as possible to avoid damaging trichomes.

Drying: the most important process

Slow drying is the secret to quality flowers. Ideal environment: 65 to 72°F (18 to 22°C), humidity 50-60%, gentle air circulation, complete darkness. Hang branches upside down on a line or drying rack. Ideal drying time: 7 to 14 days. You know its ready when smaller branches snap instead of bend. Dont rush: if buds dry too fast (under 5 days), chlorophyll doesnt degrade properly and the smoke is harsh.

Curing: the finishing touch

Curing is the maturation process in airtight jars (glass or metal, no silicone). Fill jars 75-80% full. For the first 7 days, open jars once daily for 5-10 minutes (burping) to exchange air and release excess moisture. After the first week, burp every 2-3 days. Ideal cure lasts 2-4 weeks, but buds cured for 2-3 months reach peak flavor and potency. Use a humidity meter: ideal inside the jar is 58-62%.

Long-term storage

For long-term storage, keep jars in a cool dark place (59 to 68°F / 15 to 20°C). Use Boveda or Integra Boost at 58% or 62% to maintain stable humidity. Avoid opening jars unnecessarily. Dont store in plastic bags (static damages trichomes) or in light. For storage over 6 months, consider vacuum sealing portions and freezing.

From grow to full experience

Harvesting, drying and curing are as important as the grow itself. Rushed drying or poor curing ruins even the best genetics. Invest time and patience in this phase. Use GrowerHelper to record dates, weights, drying conditions and results to refine your process.
