Moon phases in the grow

Today's moon, the 8 phases and what each one favors, from planting to harvest. Farming tradition explained for growers.

The 8 phases and what each one favors

New moon

Energy goes to the roots and to fresh starts. Good time to prep substrate, plan the cycle and soak seeds. Avoid transplants and heavy pruning.

Waxing crescent

Sap starts rising. A good window to germinate seeds and root clones; above-ground growth starts gaining strength.

First quarter

Vigorous leaf and stem growth. A great phase to transplant seedlings, pot up and apply light training like LST.

Waxing gibbous

Peak uptake and transpiration. Feed well, dial in light intensity and finish transplants before the full moon.

Full moon

Maximum energy in the canopy. Traditionally tied to harvesting flowers at their peak; avoid heavy pruning and stress.

Waning gibbous

Energy starts moving down to the roots. A good phase to harvest, flush and start drying.

Last quarter

Maintenance phase: defoliation, lollipopping and pest control stress the plant less now.

Waning crescent

Rest. Prep the next cycle, clean the grow and let the plants wind down; go lighter on watering.

How to use the lunar calendar

Does the moon really affect the grow?

The scientific evidence is limited and studies are not conclusive, but the lunar calendar is a millennia-old farming tradition (from biodynamics to rural almanacs). Many growers use the phases as a management rhythm: a natural schedule that organizes tasks and builds a habit of regular observation.

Waxing vs waning

In the tradition, the waxing moon pulls sap upward (canopy): the half for germinating, transplanting and growing. The waning moon sends energy down (roots): the half for pruning, harvesting and maintenance. Memorize that axis and all 8 phases become intuitive.

How to apply it to your grow

Use the moon as a schedule, not a dogma: stressful tasks on the waning half, planting and transplanting on the waxing half. Log every task in your diary and compare cycles: your own data will tell you whether the lunar rhythm works for your grow.
