Transplanting Cannabis Seedlings: When and How to Do It Right

Why transplant?

Transplanting moves the plant to a larger pot when roots fill the current space. If left too long in a small pot, roots circle and become rootbound, unable to absorb water and nutrients properly. Growth stalls and the plant becomes vulnerable. Timely transplanting gives roots fresh space and triggers visible growth within days.

When to transplant

The clearest sign is roots emerging from the drainage holes. Another sign: the plant looks too large for its pot, with canopy wider than the pot diameter. A practical rule: transplant from 200ml to 1L, then to 3-5L, and finally to the final pot of 7-20L depending on space and veg time.

Choosing the pot and growing medium

The ideal final pot depends on space and veg time. For indoor grows with 4-6 weeks of veg, 7-11L pots suffice. For longer veg or outdoor, 15-20L or larger pots yield bigger plants. Fabric pots are preferable as they air-prune roots and prevent circling. Use fresh quality medium with good drainage.

Step by step transplanting

Water the plant a few hours before to ease removal. Prepare the new pot with a layer of medium at the bottom. Tip the old pot sideways and gently squeeze the edges to loosen. Place your hand over the soil with the plant between your fingers and invert the pot. Position the root ball centered in the new pot, fill around with medium, press gently. Water well after transplanting to settle the soil.

Post-transplant care

After transplanting, the plant needs a few days to adjust. Keep the same light cycle. Avoid fertilizing for 3-5 days to avoid stressing roots. Water generously the first day, then return to the wet-dry cycle. Some wilting in the first days is normal. If no growth after a week, check for compacted medium or drainage issues.

Good transplanting, guaranteed growth

Transplanting is one of the most critical moments in cultivation. Respect the plants timing, use quality medium and give a few days for adjustment. With GrowerHelper, you can record each transplant and track how different techniques affect your plants.
